Xyleutes
mineus Cramer
Phalaena (Bombyx) mineus
Cramer, 1777, Papillons exot. 2: p1 131D.
Xyleutes mineus Cramer; Roepke, 1957: 25; Holloway, 1976: 88;
Diagnosis. The red wings with their unusual arrangement of blue-black patches
render this species unmistakable.
Taxonomic notes. Races with somewhat different facies occur in the Moluccas (hyphinoe Cramer)
and New Guinea to the Solomons (pallescens Roepke). The hindwings lack
the red border, and the patches on the forewings are slightly larger such that
some have coalesced; the red ground colour is less intense.
Geographical range. India to New Guinea and the Solomons.
Habitat preference. The species is mainly found in lowland rainforest,
though one was taken at 1618m on Bukit Retak, Brunei.
