Diagnosis. This species and H. subrufa Bastelberger have the wings grey
above with the medial band divided into a costal bilobed section and a small
subdorsal circle or dot that is sometimes absent. H. sternaria is much
larger, a paler grey, usually with a diffuse, oblique, paler band distal to the
medial marks. The anterior medial section has the distal lobe smaller than the
more basal one; in subrufa they are more or less equal in development.
The interior of the medial marks and the basal edge of the hindwing fascia are
reddish in subrufa. In subrufa the male genitalia have the
digitate process from the valve costa relatively larger and very slender.
Geographical range. India through S.E. Asia to Sumatra and Borneo.
Habitat preference. The species is infrequent, found mainly in lowland
rainforest of various types.
