Micrulia
catocalaria Snellen comb. n.
Eupithecia catocalaria Snellen,
1881, Tijdschr. Ent., 24: 92.
Megatheca purpurea Warren,
1897, Novit. zool., 4: 230.
Gymnoscelis lobata Hampson,
1912, J. Bombay nat. Hist. Soc., 21: 1246.
Calluga catocalaria Snellen;
Holloway, 1976: 70.
Diagnosis. See the previous species. There is much less sexual dimorphism than in medioplaga,
and the underside fasciation is strong, distinctly dark blue. The male
hindwing is only slightly modified and usually similarly marked to the forewing,
though more weakly.
Taxonomic notes. The genitalia have the generic characteristics of Micrulia, and
hence the species is transferred from Calluga. The closely related M.
gyroducta Fletcher (Louisiade Archipelago (S.E. of New Guinea), Rennell I.,
Mefor I.) comb. n. is also transferred.
Geographical range. Sulawesi, New Guinea, Philippines, Sundaland, Sri
Lanka.
Habitat preference. The species is frequent from the lowlands to 1930m,
but has mostly been taken in montane localities (G. Kinabalu, G. Trus Madi, G.
Mulu, G. Api).
