Scopula asymmetrica sp. n.

Scopula asymmetrica (holotype)
(x 1.16)

8-9mm. This is a medium sized, rather grey brown species with strongly bidentate postmedial fasciae, distal to which are similarly irregular and rather broad submarginal grey bands. In facies the species bears similarities to S. limbata Warren (Taiwan), S. ophthalmica Prout (Sulawesi) and S. ocellata Warren (Sumatra, Java), but the last two are smaller, much more strongly marked, and all have the forewing discal spot blackish: in asymmetrica it is the same grey as the fasciae. The extreme asymmetry of the valves of the male genitalia is diagnostic, seen much more weakly in ophthalmica and ocellata (left valves half size of right rather than vestigial).

Holotype . SARAWAK: Gunung Mulu Nat. Park, R.G.S. Exped. 1977-8 (J.D. Holloway et al.) Site 25, April, G. Api, 900m, 427550, lower montane forest, BM geometrid slide 18381.

Paratypes (general data as holotype): 1 Site 20, Mar-Apr. W. Melinau Gorge, 150m, 422577 FEG 3, kerangas, slide 17793; 1 Site 28, May, nr. Long Palu, FEG 1, 328428, 50m alluvial forest.

Geographical range. Borneo.

Habitat preference. The three specimens are from widely different forest types: alluvial forest; wet heath forest (kerangas); lower montane forest on limestone.
