Hypocometa clauda

Diagnosis.
This and the next species are best distinguished on features of the genitalia. The forewings in both are a dark medium green, fasciae being greyish and relatively continuous across the wing. In Bornean H. definita the forewing fasciae are lighter, giving a more green appearance, and the hindwings are straw colour rather than grey-brown. Specimens of definita from the Moluccas and New Guinea are more as in clauda. In the male genitalia the saccular process is more curved in clauda and the more distal, more setose lobe at the costal apex is twice as broad in clauda. In the female genitalia, the opening of the bursa is much more extensive and slightly finer in clauda. The ductus is twice as long and broad in definita.

Taxonomic notes. H. rufulata Warren, known only from the holotype female from Flores, may be synonymous: the genitalia are inseparable from those of clauda. Prout (1932c) placed rufulata as a race of clauda.

Geographical range. Himalaya, Borneo, ?Flores.

Habitat preference. The species is infrequent from 1600m to almost 2000m, and has been recorded from G. Kinabalu, G. Mulu and Bukit Retak.
