Diagnosis. See
above. The male lacks a fovea. Confusion with Dilophodes elegans is
possible, but P. xanthura is larger, lacks a discal spot on the hindwing,
has the dark markings more crisply defined; they are more regularly spaced along
the forewing costa.
Taxonomic notes. Reasons
for combining this species with Pogonopygia are given in the generic
description. The Bornean subspecies has darker grey markings than the typical
race.
Geographical
range. Sumatra,
Peninsular Malaysia; Borneo (ssp. baria Prout).
Habitat
preference. The
species is abundant in the upper montane zone of G. Kinabalu, particularly at
just under 2000m, and was recorded over an altitude range of 1200-2600m. It was
also found to be abundant in the upper zone of G. Mulu (around 1800m) and occurs
similarly on Bukit Pagon in Brunei.
Note: Yazaki (1994, Moths of Nepal 3:23) placed Pogonopygia xanthura
Prout as a synonym of P. pavida Bastelberger (Himalaya, Taiwan, Japan).
