Hyposidra picaria Walker; Holloway, 1976: 75.
Diagnosis. The two white forewing spots and incomplete
white hindwing bar on a medium grey ground are diagnostic.
Taxonomic
notes. The
taxon H. lactiflua Prout, described from G. Kinabalu, has genitalia as in
typical picaria and represents an aberration where the white areas,
particularly that on the hindwing, are considerably enlarged. H. leucomela Walker
from the Philippines (including the Sulu Is. and Palawan) has similar male
genitalia, but the white patches are more numerous and of a different
configuration.
Geographical range. Sundaland.
Habitat preference. The species has been taken infrequently in a range of
lowland forest types.
Biology. The species has been reared by Chey Vun Khen and staff at the Forest
Research Centre, Sepilok. The larva is short, robust, a blackish chocolate-grey,
with five irregular rings of white dots round segments A1 to A5. Further
pale dots occur on T1 and lateral to the anal clasper.
The host-plant was Acacia mangium (Leguminosae).
