Gyrtona
ferrimissalis Walker
Gyrtona ferrimissalis Walker,
1863, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 27: 90.
Gyrtona costella Walker, 1863, Ibid. 27: 94.
Gyrtona sp.; Holloway, 1976: 20, Plate 7: 82.
Diagnosis. The forewings are dark grey with paler markings similar to those of proximalis.
The sinuous submarginal and posterior part of the postmedial are not,
however, distinctly paler as in that species. In some specimens (e.g. as
illustrated by Holloway (1976)) there is a central, subdorsal longitudinal pale
streak. The male genitalia have the arms of the valves straight, almost equal
and only slightly splayed from each other. In the female genitalia the bursa is
elongate as in obliqualis but has a small, acutely conical signum and no
ornamentation to the lamella postvaginalis.
Geographical range. Borneo, Andamans, Peninsular Malaysia, Sulawesi. A
similar species with slightly different male genitalia (slide 11470) flies in
New Guinea.
Habitat preference. During the Mulu survey the species was taken
infrequently in lower montane forest (900-1000m) on both G. Mulu and G. Api and
in upper montane forest on the latter. In Brunei the species was frequent in dry
heath forest at Telisai but only taken singly in other lowland localities (Seria,
Labi road, and Daerah Belait). Other species more or less restricted to lowland
heath forest and montane forest are discussed by Holloway (in press).
