Diagnosis.
The brownish grey, fawnish and slightly angled forewing margin is somewhat
similar to that of Blasticorhinus
species
(see p. 429), but these have more fine fasciae crossing the forewing: in orientalis
these
are obscure, with only the medial zone being distinctly darker in some
specimens. Within this medial band there is a distinctive white discal bar that
is constricted centrally, occasionally almost completely broken into two.
Taxonomic
note. M. luzonensis Wileman & West (Philippines) is known
from a single female. The genitalia are similar (but not identical) to those of orientalis, so the taxa may prove to be conspecific when males
of luzonensis
can be examined.
Geographical
range. Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo.
Habitat
preference. Only seven specimens have been seen, older ones from Pontianak,
Sandakan and Kuching and, in recent surveys, from the primary forest edge at
100m near the Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah, from lowland forest in the
Barito Ulu of Kalimantan Tengah, and from the coast at Seria and from 1618m on
Bukit Retak in Brunei. Three of these localities include open habitats.
