Diagnosis.
This and the next species both have a conspicuous, darker brown, somewhat
triangular mark based on the centre of the forewing costa; in antecedens Walker
the distal border of this is evenly concave, whereas in precedens
it
is straighter but more irregular, somewhat bi-arcuate. The forewings generally
have a paler ground colour and are slightly deeper and more produced apically in
antecedens.
Robinson (1975) noted that the male of antecedens has
lateral tufts of black hairs on the abdomen whereas precedens has
ventral tufts of ochraceous hairs.
Geographical
range. Indo-Australian tropics to Australia, Fiji and Samoa.
Habitat
preference. A single Bornean record has been located, a specimen from
Samarinda in the lowlands of Kalimantan.
Biology.
The larva has been recorded feeding on Calliandra (Leguminosae) in New Guinea (unpublished
IIE records).
