The
family-group name was first used by Moore
(1884-1887) and therefore has precedence over Calesiini of Wiltshire (1990),
though Moore
assigned Calesia Guenée to his Dysgoniidae (= Ophiusini; see p. 40).
Fibiger (2003) placed Calesia in his Catocalinae and Tinolius in his Calpinae.
However, the type genera share several unusual features. These are as follows:
strikingly marked larvae with elongated primary setae; pupae with a dense
golden brown pilosity; host preference for Acanthaceae. The position of the
ostium in relation to the eighthsegment in the female and the modification of
the male eighth segment are not typically catocaline.
