Diagnosis. This species is on average very slightly larger than amphusalis but similar in facies as discussed under amphusalis. The main distinction between amphusalis and melanostalus is in the male genitalia: in melanostalus the uncus is more bulbous, shorter; the valves are narrow, with a single central downward flexure (rather than sinuous); there is no process from the apex of the sacculus; the saccus is longer than in amphusalis; the vesica is very much larger, and the two spine-bearing lobes are much more distant from each other.
Geographical range. Sumatra, Borneo.
Habitat preference. The only specimen is from lowland forest at 30-60m in the Labi area of Brunei.
