Hypena
caeruleanotata
sp. n. Bomolocha obductalis Walker sensu Holloway, 1976: 43, partim.
Hypena caeruleanotata
♂♂, ♀♀ 16-18mm. The forewing has a black basal area (apart from the dorsum which is contiguous with the paler, greyer distal area) that is distinguished by a rather square protuberance distad at one third from the costa in its postmedial border. The apical patch is obscure, marked near its posterior by a black edging towards the margin. The submarginal is punctate, the spots tinged with blue. The forewing facies is similar to, but very much darker than that of obductalis (India), and the intense blue tinge of the submarginal and often also of the distal border of the black area is diagnostic. In the male genitalia the valves are slightly shorter, with the ventral end less produced beyond the vinculum, and there is no overlap of the central pleat by a trapezoid process as seen in obductalis. The aedeagus is significantly smaller than in obductalis. In the female genitalia, the corpus bursae is very much longer than in obductalis, expanding gently from the ductus to its apex, rather than having an abrupt transition (see also the taxonomic note for the previous species). There is no rugosity or scobination.
Paratypes: 3♂♂ as holotype; 1♂ as holotype but Park H.Q., 1620m; 1♂, 2♀♀ (slides 9474, 19970) as holotype but Power Station, 1930m.
Geographical range. Borneo, Java.
Habitat preference. The species has only been recorded from G. Kinabalu; eight specimens were taken between 1200m and 1930m, one of the nine attributed to obductalis by Holloway (1976) being a female of the previous species. The specimen from Java was taken at approximately 1350m.
