Rhypotoses nigrocrocea Walker
comb. n.
Orgyia
nigrocrocea Walker,
1862, J. Linn. Soc. (Zool.), 6:124.
Diagnosis. This and the next species have orange-yellow forewings and very dark
brown hindwings. They differ in the extent of black on the forewing. It extends
from the medial zone to the margin in nigrocrocea but is restricted to an
irregular medial area in nigriplaga.
Taxonomic note. Both species were described in Orgyia and were placed later in Aroa.
The venation is typical of Rhypotoses as are the male genitalia,
which are of the quadrilateral valved type. The two taxa may prove to be
conspecific as, apart from the extent of the black on the forewing, they are
very similar. The females are unknown.
Geographical range. Borneo.
Habitat preference. Only old material has been seen, mostly from lowland
localities.
