Comostola
turgescens Prout comb. & stat. n.
Pyrrhorachis pyrrhogona turgescens Prout,
1917, Novit. zool. 24: 305.
Pyrrhorachis pyrrhogona Walker,
sensu Holloway, 1976: 63.
Diagnosis. See Comostola pyrrhogona
Walker comb. n. and genitalic distinction in the notes
following.
Taxonomic notes. C.
turgescens is a species distinct from pyrrhogona, sympatric with it.
The male genitalia are distinguished by the presence of a pincer-like structure
on the sacculus that varies in shape and size but shows a general decrease in the latter from the
Himalaya to Sulawesi. Probably several races are involved: the genitalia of
three are illustrated. The extent and complexity of the sclerotisation of the
female lamella antevaginalis shows a similar trend.
Geographical range. N.E.
Himalaya, Sundaland, Sulawesi.
Habitat preference. The
species is rarer than the previous one, recorded from forested localities at
150m and 1000m on G. Mulu, at 300m in Ulu Temburong in Brunei, and at 1500m on
G. Kinabalu.
