Bocula
xanthostola Hampson
Bocula
xanthostola Hampson, 1926, Descr. Gen. Spec. Noctuinae,
p. 227.
Aramuna
marginata Moore,
1882, Lep.
Ceylon,
3: 36, praeocc.
Bocula xanthostola Hampson; Holloway, 1976: 35.
Diagnosis.This
and the next three species all have the male hindwings strongly modified by
reduction, distortion and the presence of patches of androconial scales. The
blackish marginal zone of the forewing, when present, has a subapical notch, but
the band and the notch are more shallow than in other species with this feature
such as B. quadrilineata Walker.
In xanthostola
the
forewing discal spot is a slightly oblique dash, and the male hindwing is pale
straw colour over the posterior two thirds; the androconial patch in the costal
zone is darker. No females have been located. See also the diagnosis of the next
species.
Taxonomic
note. All four species with this type of strongly modified male
hindwing have very similar male genitalia, with the valve apex externally
falcate.
Geographical
range. Sri Lanka,
Peninsular Malaysia (Barlow, 1982), Sumatra (HS / ZSM), Borneo.
Habitat
preference. The only specimen seen is from an area of disturbed montane
forest and cultivation at 1200m near Bundu Tuhan on the slopes of G. Kinabalu.
