Diagnosis. The markings of the forewings and lobing of the male hindwing are
similar to those of T. ceramica, but the fasciation is green and brownish
green, the hindwings being yellow-brown.
Taxonomic notes. Prout (1932c) included this species in Tympanota, with the latter
placed as a subgenus of Sauris. Holloway (1976) considered the taxa gyiarces
and seclusa, described from Kinabalu and Peninsular Malaysia
respectively, represented extremes of variation in development of the male
hindwing lobe, that in gyiarces being about twice as large as that in seclusa
(and typical arfakensis) and yellower, only slightly tinged brown.
The male genitalia of the two extremes show no obvious differences, though the
coremata are somewhat narrower in the holotype of gyiarces.
Geographical range. New Guinea; S. Moluccas (ssp. catopercna); Luzon,
Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia (ssp. gyiarces).
Habitat preference. As with T. erecta, the only records have been
from G. Kinabalu over an altitude range of 1050-2970m. It is most abundant from
1900m to 2600m.
