Synegia
potenza Holloway
Synegia potenza Holloway, 1976: 83.
Diagnosis. The species occurs in two forms. One could be confused with S. obscura
but has a yellower tone to the ground colour, and the fasciae are a paler
grey but more extensive. The forewing postmedial has a more irregular distal
edge. The hindwing lacks the irregular submarginal ring of obscura. The
second form has the fasciae more clearly delineated with dark grey and has a
broad area of dark grey over the posterior half of each wing distal to the
postmedial. The male genitalia have two processes from the valve costa and three
cornuti in the aedeagus vesica. The female has the ostium broad, crinkled. The
bursa is short, with a narrow, heavily sclerotised, fluted basal part, and a
thickly membranous, asymmetric distal part lacking a signum.
Taxonomic notes. Undescribed species with similar facies but two rather than three
cornuti in the aedeagus vesica and the costal processes in a different position
occur in Sulawesi (slides 12377-8) and Seram (slides 12505-6).
Geographical range. Borneo.
Habitat preference. This species was described from a series taken mostly
in upper montane forest at 1620-1930m on G. Kinabalu, with one specimen from
2600m. During the Mulu survey a single female was taken in lower montane forest
at 1000m on G. Mulu.
