Subgenus
Aletia Hubner
Type species: vitellina Hubner (Europe).
Generic
names currently embraced by the definition below: Heliophila Hubner (type
species pallens Linnaeus, praeocc.); Hyphilare Hubner (type
species albipuncta Denis & Schiffermuller, Europe); Hypopteridia Warren
(type species reversa Moore) ; Persectania Hampson (type species ewingii
Westwood, Australia).
This
group represents one of the major groups recognised by Franclemont, but can be
defined only on male genitalia characters generally considered plesiomorphic
within the trifine subfamilies: a well developed corona set on a cucullus with a
long neck; simple harpe overlapping a strong process from the valve costa. The
aedeagus vesica is long or short, variably ornamented, corresponding with an
appendix bursae of comparable length in the female. The trifine hair pencils are
present in the male. The first eight Mythimna species listed below, up to
M. radiata Bremer, fall into this group. For the Bornean representatives
at least, the aedeagus vesica is short, often swollen, with a small group of
needle-like cornuti or a single larger cornutus set distally on it; the appendix
bursae of the female is correspondingly small, usually smaller than the bursa.
