Amyna dohertyi sp. n. (Plate 2, Figs 39, 55)
GG 12-13mm.
This species is a similar size and coloration to axis, but the reniform
is always whitish and accompanied by a small white bar on the costa. There is
also a distinctive white patch near the apex. Males have a forewing fovea
intermediate in development between those of axis and natalis.
The species is a member of the aroa Bethune‑Baker (see below) species group where
most taxa have similar facies and share features of the male genitalia such as
a robust and sometimes ornate uncus, a similarly robust dorsal arm to the valve
and a relatively well‑developed curved process interior to the base of
the cleft between the two arms. In dohertyi the uncus is short but only
moderately robust, but the dorsal arm of the valve is blunt, somewhat square
apically. The curved process at the cleft of the valve is much broader than in
the other species. Females from Sumatra (slide 20845) and Java (slide 20671)
that are probably associated with the males have a less robust ductus bursae
than in padanga Swinhoe (Sumatra, Java; reduced white area on the
forewing) and a shorter eighth segment than in indignata Wileman (Philippines; only females available). Other
members of the group include aroa Bethune‑Baker (New Guinea) flavirena Holloway (New Caledonia and Loyalty Is.), apicipuncta Turner (Queensland) and undescribed species from:
Sulawesi (slides 8813, 20674); Dampier I. and New Ireland (slides 21246,
21249); Goodenough I. (slide 21248); and, related to the previous one, the
Solomons (slide 21233, 21250) .
Holotype G. PULO LAUT (Doherty) 96‑34,
BM noctuid slide 20381.
Paratype G. As holotype.
Geographical range. Borneo, Sumatra (Marang; slide
20655), Java (slide 20671).
Habitat preference. Representation is restricted to two males
from Pulo Laut, a low‑lying island at the south of Borneo.
