SUBFAMILY BRYOPHILINAE

Speidel et al. (1996) placed this group in a clade that was defined by presence of an epaulette in the tympanal membrane, distinguishing the group on the basis of lichen‑feeding larvae bearing long primary setae. They referred to Stenoloba Staudinger (see below) as a possible member needing further investigation, but Sugi (1970) had already associated the genus with Cryphia Hübner, the type genus of the Cryphiinae, a synonym of Bryophilinae (Fibiger & Lafontaine, 2005) on the very features mentioned above. Sugi, referring to earlier work by Yamamoto, stated that the primary setae on the thorax and abdomen are generally long, arising from well sclerotised pinacula. Seta SD1 on the meso- and metathoracic segments is much longer than SD2, a feature seen also on at least the metathorax of Cryphia species. All prolegs are fully developed. Kononenko & Ronkay (2000, 2001) and Ronkay (2001) also placed Stenoloba in the Bryophilinae.
