Leptocola Gen.
n.
Type
species: marginangulata sp. n.
The
build and facies of the two species in this genus are very similar to that of Papuacola
(see
p. 148), except the ground colour is a rich, dark brown, against which the
subapical costal mark of the forewing appears paler. There is often a bluish
suffusion at the centre of the forewing.
The male
abdomen, however, is very different. The eighth sternite consists of an
approximately square frame of sclerotisation that has curvature on its basal
side to enclose a small corema, with short apodemes directed laterally from this
on each side. The corresponding tergite is largely membranous except for a
small, heart-shaped sclerite centrally that is thicker on each side of its
distal cleft. The genitalia are bilaterally symmetric, the valves rather
elongate, tongue-like, upcurved, centrally broader, with fine hair-setae from
the ventral part directed dorsally over a broad costa, but lacking other
processes. The valve bases are well separated (adjacent in Papuacola),
but support a similar juxta consisting of two bands forming an inverted ‘V’.
Beneath this within the vinculum is an unusual ovate structure, seen also in Platyjionia
(see
above). The uncus is similar to that of Papuacola but is associated with a moderate
scaphium. The tegumen is rectangular on each side, with moderate peniculi. There
is a structure that may be a paratergal sclerite. The aedeagus has a larger
vesica.
The
female of the type species lacks the complex sterigma of Papuacola.
The ostium is flimsy, located at the anterior of the eighth segment, the ductus
tapering away from it to a distal, sclerotised section with a colliculum, just
before it opens into the pyriform bursa. The ductus seminalis arises at the
junction of the neck of the ‘pear’ with the spherical part.
Both
included species are described below.
