Diagnosis. This is one of the smaller Bornean species, with more distinct fasciation on a slightly paler ground. The male labial palps are long and have the scales over the second segment in a shallow dome. The male antennae are serrate and fasciculate. The discal mark of the forewing is not conspicuously surrounded by yellow. The male genitalia are marked by: a slightly bifid apex to the uncus; short, triangular, apically falcate valves; a juxta with a spined, ligulate dorsal process; a massive spine in the aedeagus vesica that is robustly hooked apically and based in a field of tight corrugation that extends to the aedeagus apex.
Taxonomic note. The holotype of ineffectalis has lost its abdomen, but a topotypic male (slide 2811) had genitalia as described above, as also did the holotype (slide 2812; also from Sri Lanka) of ochreistigma which is therefore brought into synonymy. Poole (1989) listed Cerynea laufellalis Walker from Borneo and the type species as synonyms, but both are distinct, as discussed below.
Geographical range. Sri Lanka, Borneo.
Habitat preference. This is probably a lowland species that can tolerate disturbance, as indicated by the biotope of the only specimen taken in recent surveys (slide 20041; Brunei at 60m near Lamunin). The holotype of laufellalis was taken by A.R. Wallace in Sarawak, probably in the lowlands, and there is a specimen from Pulo Laut.
