Naarda acolutha sp. n.

Naarda acolutha
Figure 361

8mm. This species is somewhat similar to N. fuscicosta Hampson (Sri Lanka) and also bears a vague resemblance to some larentiine geometrid species in the genus Acolutha Warren. The ground colour of the wings is pale yellow and marked in purple, though much more intensely than in fuscicosta, with a straighter interior boundary to the hindwing border. All wings are bordered in purple from just distal to the centre, and there is also shading along the costa and fine broken fasciae medially. The purple margins are slightly variegated, with a darker patch at the centre of the distal margin of the forewing. The male antennae are ciliate (bipectinate in fuscicosta), and the labial palps are moderately elongate with a slight crest of scales dorsally on the second segment in acolutha. The male genitalia (slide 20092) have the valves narrow, with a further reduction in width over a short distance centrally, tapering to an acute apex from three-quarters. The saccus is very short. The aedeagus vesica lacks cornuti.

Holotype . PULO LAUT, (Doherty), 96-34, BM noctuid slide 20092.

Taxonomic note. A specimen from the Khasia Hills (slide 20093) has similar facies but the male genitalia have distinctive lateral lobes at the base of the uncus, and the valves are rounded apically.

Geographical range. Borneo (Pulo Laut).

Habitat preference. Pulo Laut is a low-lying island adjacent to south-east Borneo.
