Diagnosis and taxonomic note.
This species and iconicalis have been considered conspecific in the past but are probably distinct. The forewings of similata are a slightly paler and richer brown, and the area distad to the transverse fascia is more fawn in tone and generally paler over the posterior half, though this paler zone does not extend much beyond the submarginal. In the syntypes (Himalaya; BMNH and MNHU, Berlin) the distal half of the forewing is slightly more variegated and fasciated than in Bornean material, but is otherwise similar, rather than as in iconicalis. In the male genitalia the valves are variable but generally broader in similata and more likely to have small processes on the ventral edge of the central pleat: a triangular one basally; a very small lobe distally, set just apart from the edge. In the female genitalia, the corpus bursae is smaller in iconicalis, pyriform to ovate, whereas in similata there is a distinct neck between the narrow ductus and the more spherical corpus bursae.

Geographical range. Himalaya, Taiwan, Indochina, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, New Guinea, Fiji.

Habitat preference. The species is commoner than iconicalis, occurring in lowland forest and extending in smaller numbers to as high as 1930m.
