Spilosoma
hosei Rothschild
Diacrisia hosei Rothschild, 1910, Novit zool., 17: 137.
Diagnosis. This species is similar to the next but somewhat smaller and
distinguished by features listed in the description of the latter. Both can be
distinguished from other yellow Bornean taxa by the strong tornal black markings
on the hindwing and the widely separate antemedial and postmedial spots on the
forewing dorsum. S. borneensis is some that similar but is a browner
yellow with a reddish abdomen, and a sinuous brown band marking the forewing
postmedial.
Taxonomic notes. This taxon is externally very similar to, and possibly merely a
subspecies of the Sumatran S. procedra Swinhoe. But procedra has
the valve apex rounded, not asymmetrically excavate, and a less extensive tuft
of spines in the aedeagus vesica.
Geographical range. Borneo.
Habitat preference. The species is frequent in a range of lowland forest
types. It is replaced at higher altitudes by the next species.
