Maxates
marculenta Prout comb. & stat. n.
Gelasma hemitheoides marculenta Prout,
1933, Gross-Schmett. Erde, 12: 96.
Gelasma hemitheoides Prout;
Holloway, 1976: 62.
Diagnosis. This species resembles G. melancholica but is a slightly
bluer green, with the ground colour slightly paler distal to the postmedials.
The forewing margins are less curved than in melancholica. The ventral
lobe of the valve is prominent. The eighth sternite bears a pair of spines like
antelope horns.
Taxonomic notes. In M. hemitheoides Prout comb. n. there is an asymmetrically
bicornute process to the valve just ventral to the usual lobe. The spines on the
eighth sternite are adjacent, not well separated.
Geographical range. Borneo.
Habitat preference. All material taken during the Mulu survey is from lower montane
forest at 1000m on G. Mulu and 900m on G. Api. On G. Kinabalu the species is
frequent from 1500m to 1930m.
