Herochroma
subtepens Walker comb. n.
Hypochroma subtepens Walker,
1860, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus., 21: 438.
Archaeobalbis subtepens Walker;
Holloway, 1982: 241.
Diagnosis. This species, H. orientalis Holloway comb. n. and H.
serrativalva Holloway comb. n. (Peninsular Malaysia; Fig 115) can be
distinguished from the H. cristata Warren comb. n. group by the
black (cf. dull red) submarginal bands on the underside and by the apex of the
male hind tibia, which is produced dorsally. The two Bornean subtepens group
species are only reliably distinguished on features of the male genitalia: the
costal process of the valve is angled basally less produced distally and with a
distinct, small central spur in subtepens (in orientalis the
costal part is basally rounded); the vestigial uncus is more prominent,
distinctly bilobed in orientalis; the transtillae are more acutely and
geometrically triangular in subtepens.
Taxonomic notes. This group is discussed further by Holloway (1982: 241-2).
Geographical range. Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia.
Habitat preference. Three specimens have been taken in recent surveys:
two in lowland forest on G. Mulu and at Semongok near Kuching, and one at 900m
on lower montane forest on G. Api.
