Polypogon wordsworthi

Figure 309

8-9mm, 10mm. The male antennae have an elongate node approximately centrally. The labial palps are strongly curved. The facies is similar to that of some of the more typical members of Sinarella Bryk illustrated by Owada (1987) such as S. aegrota Butler (Japan, China, Korea), but the male foreleg has the tarsi normal rather than reduced to one. The ground colour of the wings is a pale creamy buff, irrorated and marked with black. The forewing has a lunulate discal mark and irregular, obscure antemedial and postmedial fasciae. The postmedial is distinctly sigmoid, the anterior curve running round the discal mark. The submarginal is similarly sinuous, roughly parallel to the postmedial, incorporating a white lunule at the dorsum and another at one-third from the costa. The hindwing also has postmedial and submarginal fasciae, but these are more regular, gently curved, and may converge very slightly towards the dorsum. The eighth segment of the male abdomen is unmodified. The genitalia have valves that are digitate distally, slightly curved and tapering. The valve costa gives rise basally to a large, squarish, but distally falcate process. There is a large saccus. The aedeagus vesica is large, complex, scobinate in places, with two bulbous cornuti at its junction with the aedeagus. The female genitalia have a broad, funnel-like ostium that leads into a heavily sclerotised and corrugated section that expands into the corpus bursae which is irregularly elongate and scobinate, with some indication of a sparser, horseshoe-like array distad.
