Amata vicarians sp. n.

Amata vicarians vicarians
(paratype)

16-17mm. This species is allied to pseudextensa from which it can be distinguished by a short zone of white fringe scales at the forewing apex, and a narrower, more elongate subapical transparent patch. Comparison of male genitalia is precluded as the only specimen of pseudextensa is female. The female of the Bukit Pagon race (see below) differs in having the lamella postvaginalis modified into a conical pouch.

Holotype SARAWAK: Gunong Mulu Mat. Park, R.G.S. Exped. 1977-8 (J.D. Holloway et al.) BM 1978-206. Site 5, January, Camp 4 Mulu 1780m 451463 [upper montane forest], BM arctiid slide 4141.

Paratypes: 8 with general data as holotype: 4 as holotype; 2 at Site 1, 1790m 452463; 1 at Site 2, 1790m 452463: 1 at G. Mulu subsummit, 2100m 464465.

The species is represented by three montane races in N. Sarawak and Brunei. The typical race from G. Mulu has the most extensive transparent areas though that posterior to vein CuA2 is divided; they are diagnostically tinged yellowish. The dark areas of the wings are slightly paler, browner than in other races. The abdominal segments are all ringed with dull yellow.
