Diagnosis. The forewing margin is irregular in shape, strongly concave over the
anterior part, and the hindwing has the fringes expanded to give a third tail
between the usual two. The medial zone on both wings bounded by the antemedial
and postmedial fasciae is distinctly and uniformly darker than the areas on
either side See also the similar new species described under "Epiplema"
saccata sp. n. and "Gathynia"
mesilauensis Holloway).
Taxonomic notes. The Bornean subspecies is smaller, greyer than the typical race, which
has a rufous brown tone.
Geographical range. N.E. Himalaya, Taiwan; Borneo (ssp. kinabalua)
Habitat preference. The original material of the Bornean subspecies was
taken from 1500m to 1930m on G. Kinabalu, but during the Mulu survey the species
was recorded mostly in hill dipterocarp forest at 150m and 500m, and once in
lower montane forest at 1000m, all on the transect of G. Mulu.
Biology. The species has been reared from the family Rubiaceae in Taiwan (S.-H.
Yen, pers. comm.).
